Dr. Vasilis Makris, MD

Thank you for allowing us to fulfill our dream and destiny to serve you in the most comfortable way possible.

Dr. Makris came to Indiana in 1979. After graduating as an eye surgeon in 1993 from Indiana University, his vision was to find the right location and facility to create an environment that best serves his patients needs. In 1993 he established Makris Vision Group in Muncie, Indiana. Makris Vision Group has been in its current location since established. An on-site fully licensed and accredited ambulatory surgery center was added in 2001.

Dr. Makris is an ocular surgeon practicing general ophthalmology with a special interest in anterior segment surgery. Dr. Makris received his Bachelor of Science degree from Valparaiso University in northwestern Indiana and his Master of Science degree in biochemistry from Loyola University of Chicago. He completed his medical degree studies at Indiana University Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI). He served his internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital on the north side of Indianapolis. He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Dr. Makris has been a frequent presenter at national and international meetings. He was awarded the Best Paper of Session in the 2001 American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting.

Dr. John Lawrence

Doctor of Optometry

Dr. Lawrence graduated from the IU School of Optometry in 2018. He received his Bachelors of Arts, with a major in Human Biology and a minor in Psychology in 2014. He was awarded the IU Recognition scholarships multiple semesters for maintaining extraordinary GPA and high SAT scores.

As an intern, Dr. Lawrence gained experience working with lens manufacturers, pediatric patients, and the IU eye disease clinic.

Dr. Lawrence also had hands-on experience working with service members, managing refractive surgery post-ops, treating and managing disease, and working with geriatric patients during his Residency term in the VA Medical system.

While in residency at Hershel “Woody” VA Medical center in West Virginia, Dr. Lawrence provided primary and emergency care, while comanaging cataract surgery, retinal disease, and glaucoma patients.

Dr. Lawrence is passionate about Optometry because he finds profound fulfillment in helping his patients better understand disease and how it can be treated. He enjoys the research and exploration of eye disease, when he can help patients attain their sight again. Nothing fulfills him more.

Dr. Lawrence enjoys building computers, gaming, and playing sports and music. Prior to attending optometry school, he fenced, played football, wrestled, threw shot put in track, and played the tenor saxophone. He enjoys jazz music and looks forward to picking up the saxophone again. 

Dr. Lawrence feels fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Makris to further his knowledge of Optometry and eye disease. He is eager to gain experience, hone skills, and learn from an incredible and experienced Ophthalmologist.

Dr. Makris is proud to welcome Dr. Lawrence into the Practice and believes he represents the Makris Vision Group values and ethical standards he has established over the last 30 years.

Dr. Jeffrey Rapkin

Doctor of Ophthalmology

Dr. Jeffrey Rapkin, MD is a Retina Specialist in Muncie, Indiana. He has 39 years experience in the medical field. He graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1982.

As an Ophthalmologist Specialist, he diagnoses and treats eye disease, including vision loss, detached retinas, cataracts and glaucoma. He has been affiliated with Makris Cataract Center for over 10 years.
